Celebrating Israel at summer camp is a lot of fun. But when questions and issues about contemporary Israel begin to arise, often things get more and more complex. The diversity of stakeholders in the camp community can further complicate the relationship between camp and Israel – and a topic that camp leadership can’t afford to ignore. These relationships are multi-faceted and impacted by issues including the Israel-Palestinian conflict, religion and state, among others. This growing demand for a nuanced approach to Israel education has raised many question about the role and responsibilities of lay leadership, professional staff, counselors, shlichim, campers, parents, and educators in this increasingly present and urgent conversation. This session will serve to better understand who our young people are today and how they relate to Israel. We will also look specifically at how Jewish leadership ought to be engaging today’s younger generation around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. By necessity we will also push ourselves to more deeply understand our own convictions about Israel to uncover some of the challenges and obstacles that face Israel and conflict education.
